CSO database and eco-settlements mapping

A mapped database of civil society organisations working on sustainable urban development in Kenya, and a spatial tool for bringing informal settlements into urban planning.

The problem

CSUDP needed to show which civil society organisations were promoting sustainable urban development in Kenya and what each was doing — and to make informal settlements, which rarely meet urban planning standards, visible in planning where spatial and urban master plans do not exist.

The solution

Two applications. The CSO database (completed November 2017) maps organisations and their projects and aggregates the data by county, CSO type and development sector; data is collected on mobile devices with Open Data Kit, with manual entry of paper records where needed, and access is granted per module and per county. The eco-settlements mapping application (completed April 2019) supports spatial querying and visualisation of informal settlements, from data gathered through community participation forums.

Our role

We developed both applications.

Outcome

The eco-settlements platform helps residents of informal settlements champion their inclusion in urban development plans and negotiate for services.
